Workbook Feeback

Here is some feedback that will benefit all of you as you begin to work on completing your workbooks.

~deaf and Deaf cannot be used interchangeably.
**Deaf is used when referring to Deaf people, their culture and the social identity
**deaf is used when referring to absence of hearing

~stay away from: deafness, suffer, the D/deaf, hearing disability, deaf people

~You may place the word Deaf in front of people with referring to the cultural component but you should place the word deaf after the person because you are discussing hearing loss and therefore the person should be placed first.

~Why should your audience listen to you? What are your qualifications?

~What is your mission, goal, and expected outcomes of your workshop? What can they expect?

~Too much focus on hearing loss. This should be brief, basic and to the point. You want your audience to understand what hearing loss means to a person that experiences it. Charts with what you hear and where are great for this. Stay away from words such as suffer.

~Hearing aids and Cochlear implants are different. How? Explain they do not work for everyone and do not cure hearing loss. How a person uses them and benefits from them varies greatly.

~References were cited incorrectly. Please see writing center. The bulk of the class struggled with this.

~Flow and organization was not always present. Revise your workshops for proper organization. Each section should be on a separate page

~Cover page is needed.

~Names must be typed.

~Check for passive and active voice as you write.

~Resources and references are not the same thing. Be sure your resources are titled.

~Deaf Culture needs to be explained not just discussed. What does it mean to be Deaf?

~An introduction is needed before you explain the two views of what it means to be Deaf. Be sure you place emphasis on the culture as this is what most people do not understand or know about.

~Cite everything

~APA or MLA is accepted. Select one and stay with that.

~Begin working to develop your dialogues and select vocabulary that pertains to your area. Your dialogues will be created exactly as they are in your book. You will create a dialogue with the required topics provided. Each dialogue will be written in ASL and English and then signed on a DVD.
